SverigeID for foreign residents in Sweden – how to apply
From 1 December 2026 the Swedish Police issue a new ID card for people who are registered in Sweden (folkbokförda) but are not Swedish citizens. The card includes SverigeID, the state electronic ID. It replaces the Skatteverket ID card for this group.
Book by phone only: call the Police on 114 14 (from abroad +46 77 114 14 00). You can book from 1 November 2026, and the application itself can be made from 1 December 2026.
Who can apply?
- You are not a Swedish citizen.
- You are registered in the Swedish population register (folkbokförd).
- You can prove your identity in an approved way (see below).
- You turn nine or older this year. If you are under 18, your guardians must give written consent, both of them if there are two.
How to apply
- Call 114 14 and book a time on 1 December 2026 or later.
- Read the SverigeID terms of use on polisen.se before your visit. You accept them at the station.
- Bring proof of identity: an approved ID document, an approved person who can vouch for you (intygsgivare), or your residence permit card. Do not bring a population register extract (personbevis).
- Go to one of the police stations below. Your photo and fingerprints are taken, and SverigeID is linked to your new card.
Approved ID documents
- Skatteverket ID card
- Swedish driving licence
- Swedish SIS-marked ID card
- Swedish service card issued by a state agency
- Passport from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland issued from 1 September 2006
- EU passport or EU national ID card that meets EU security requirements
People who can vouch for you include your spouse or registered partner, a cohabiting partner (at least six months), parents, grandparents, and adult children, grandchildren or siblings. They must bring their own valid ID. With a certificate of the relationship, an employer of at least one year, a guardian (god man), a foster parent or a case officer at a Swedish authority can also vouch for you.

What can I use it for?
