SverigeID and ID cards in Sweden – independent guide

From 1 December 2026 Sweden gets SverigeID, a state-issued electronic ID that you can use to log in to digital services. It is issued by the Swedish Police. Residents without Swedish citizenship can get it too.

Key facts

  • You can apply from 1 December 2026, in person at the Police.
  • If you are registered in Sweden (folkbokförd) but not a Swedish citizen, you get SverigeID on a new Police ID card. You book only by phone, 114 14 (from 1 November), and you can apply only at certain police stations.
  • The new card is not a travel document. For travel you need a passport from your home country.
  • The Skatteverket (Tax Agency) ID card is being phased out. The last day to apply is 27 January 2027.
  • At launch, SverigeID works only on the Police's own "Mina sidor". More services are planned. It does not replace BankID.
